Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Meshtastic?
Meshtastic is an open-source project that lets you use affordable mesh radios to communicate off-grid. Messages are relayed between devices in a mesh network, meaning the more devices in range, the stronger and farther your network reaches - no cell towers or internet required.
What is MeshCore?
MeshCore is an alternative open-source firmware for mesh radio hardware. It offers different features and performance characteristics compared to Meshtastic. All Exere devices support both platforms, so you can choose whichever fits your needs.
How far can Exere radios communicate?
Range depends on terrain, antenna choice, and obstructions. In open terrain with a clear line of sight, you can expect several miles with the 5dBi antenna. In urban or forested environments, range will be shorter. Using a Basestation at an elevated position can significantly extend your network's reach.
Do I need a license to use these radios?
Exere devices operate on license-free ISM bands (915 MHz in the US). No amateur radio license is required for standard use.
What is the difference between the Ityr, Basestation, and Ityr V?
The Ityr is a handheld portable radio for personal use in the field. The Basestation is a fixed unit designed to anchor your mesh network from a stationary location like a home, camp, or command post. The Ityr V is designed for permanent or semi-permanent installation in a vehicle for mobile operations.
Are Exere radios water-resistant?
Yes - all Exere devices are built with water-resistant housing. We are currently working toward a formal IP rating. Until then, we recommend avoiding full submersion.
Can I use Exere radios internationally?
Mesh radio regulations vary by country. The 915 MHz band used by Exere devices is approved in the US, Canada, Australia, and several other regions. Please check your local regulations before operating outside the US.
